๐Ÿ“– Markup vs Margin: The Key Difference

Markup is the percentage added to the cost to get the selling price. Margin is the percentage of the selling price that is profit. They reference different base amounts, which is why they produce different numbers.

Margin = Markup รท (1 + Markup)
Markup = Margin รท (1 โˆ’ Margin)

Example

A product costs $100 with a 50% markup:

  • Selling price = $100 ร— 1.50 = $150
  • Profit = $50
  • Markup = $50 รท $100 = 50%
  • Margin = $50 รท $150 = 33.33%

The markup is 50% (based on cost). The margin is 33.33% (based on selling price). Same dollar profit, different percentage bases.
