๐Ÿ“– How to Calculate Studs for a Wall

Wall studs are spaced at regular intervals, typically 16 inches on center (OC) for load-bearing walls or 24 inches OC for non-load-bearing partitions.

Studs = (Wall Length in inches รท Spacing) + 1 + Corners ร— 2 + Openings ร— 2
Each door/window adds 2 king studs + 2 jack studs (cripples extra)

Standard Stud Spacing Rules

  • 16" OC: Load-bearing walls, exterior walls, and walls supporting floors above
  • 24" OC: Non-load-bearing interior partition walls
  • 12" OC: High-load areas, elevator shafts, or specialty applications

Additional Studs for Openings

Each door or window opening requires additional framing members:

  • 2 king studs โ€” full-height studs on each side of the opening
  • 2 jack studs (trimmers) โ€” shorter studs supporting the header
  • 1 header โ€” horizontal beam spanning the opening
  • Cripple studs โ€” short studs above windows and below sills
