📖 How to Calculate Roofing Shingles

Roofing materials are measured in "squares." One roofing square covers 100 square feet of roof area. The number of bundles per square depends on the shingle type.

Squares = (Length × Width × Pitch Factor × (1 + Waste%)) ÷ 100
Bundles = Squares × Bundles per Square

Step-by-Step Process

  1. Measure the footprint. Measure the length and width of each roof section from the ground or from blueprints.
  2. Apply the pitch multiplier. A steeper roof has more surface area. Multiply by the pitch factor (e.g., 1.054 for a 4/12 pitch).
  3. Add waste. Add 10% for a standard gable roof, 15% for hip roofs, and 20% for complex designs with many valleys.
  4. Divide by 100 to get the number of roofing squares.
  5. Multiply by bundles per square. 3-tab shingles use 3 bundles per square. Architectural shingles use 4.

Bundles per Square by Shingle Type

  • 3-Tab shingles: 3 bundles per square (each bundle covers ~33.3 sq ft)
  • Architectural/Laminate: 4 bundles per square (each covers ~25 sq ft)
  • Heavy Architectural: 5 bundles per square (each covers ~20 sq ft)
