📖 How to Calculate Sand Needed

Sand is sold by the cubic yard or ton. To calculate the amount needed, determine the volume of the area and convert to cubic yards.

Cubic Yards = (Length × Width × Depth) ÷ 27
All measurements in feet. Divide cubic feet by 27 to get cubic yards.

Sand Weight by Type

  • Construction sand: ~2,700 lbs per cubic yard (1.35 tons)
  • Play sand: ~2,500 lbs per cubic yard (1.25 tons)
  • Concrete sand: ~2,800 lbs per cubic yard (1.40 tons)
  • Mason sand: ~2,600 lbs per cubic yard (1.30 tons)

Coverage per Cubic Yard

One cubic yard of sand covers approximately:

  • 324 sq ft at 1" deep
  • 162 sq ft at 2" deep
  • 108 sq ft at 3" deep
  • 81 sq ft at 4" deep
